What are Solar Panels?
Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, are devices that convert sunlight into electricity using the photovoltaic effect. They are made up of multiple interconnected solar cells, typically made of silicon, which generate an electrical current when exposed to sunlight.
When sunlight hits the solar cells in a solar panel, the photons in the sunlight knock electrons loose from the atoms in the solar cells, creating a flow of electrons or electricity. This direct current (DC) electricity is then converted into alternating current (AC) electricity using an inverter, which is suitable for use in homes, businesses, and other electrical systems.
Solar panels are commonly used to generate electricity for a wide range of applications, including powering homes, businesses, and industrial processes, as well as providing electricity for remote locations and charging electric vehicles. They are a form of renewable energy, as they utilize the abundant and clean energy from the sun, which can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower electricity bills, and decrease dependence on fossil fuels.
